Center of Stone Culture
Iksan is hometown for Samdeuk Kim, the great master of stone statue of Buddha, who was affected by Asadal. In stone craft, the technology of the stone processing that had succeeded to Jongcheon Lee, Sunbok Yun, Pilsu Yang, Myeongsu Bak and Boksu Bak is carried onby Odal Gwon(Namgang Stone) and Oksu Kim(Ilsim Stone) of Iksan now. Gwon and Kim are two of the 14 master of Korea which prove the reputation as a center of stone industry.
At the office of Korea Resources Corporation in Iksan, professional stone processor are fostered through specialized courses. Iksan is also the only one venue of stone culture festival in Korea.
181 companies, 20% of total stone enterprises in Korea), are established cooperative organization such as Hwangdeung Agriculture & Industry Stone Complex and concentrate on producing of stone crafted products and stone processing.
High Quality of Iksan Stone
Stone produced in Iksan is distributed in up to 1,072ha land around Hwangdeung, Hamyeol and Nangsan.The stone reserves are estimated to be 1,062 million ㎡.
Stone of Iksan is light gray and turns into light green when raining due to the low iron content. Being wetproof, it is perfect in making quality stone crafted products.
Granite resists rust and has beautiful and uniform flower pattern. Mireuk Temple Tower, Wanggung five-story tower, Stone Seated Buddha in Yeon-dong and Three Stone Buddha in Taebong Temple are the representative cultural assets made of the Iksan stone.
