Baekje Royal Palace in Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri

① Baekje Royal Palace in Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri

  • The Exhibition Hall facilitates the understanding of Wanggung-ri site in general.
  • The exhibition hall helps visitors to generally understand the Wanggung-ri site by explaining the relation among King Mu, Iksan and Wanggung-ri site and presenting the excavation results at the Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri using miniatures, status sheets and multimedia.
  • It was verified that the Wanggung-ri site (Historic Site No. 408) were multi-purpose site of the royal palace site during the reign of King Mu in the Baekje period. The later temple site was on the same location as found by the excavation work by the Buyeo National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage from 1989 up to the present as a part of the Baekje Cultural Sphere Site Maintenance Project.
  • Baekje Royal Palace leveled the land on a hill about 40m above sea level at the end of the ridge of Yonghwasan Mountain and built a rectangular wall, which was 3m high, 490m long from south to north and 240m long from east to west, using paving stones, rectangular stones, cut stones and mud.
  • The royal palace was built with elaborate planning from the beginning by dividing the space at the ratio of one to one or two to one. The entire space was divided in half and the southern section was used for rituals and living. The northern part was used as a back garden and craft workshop. The southern part for rituals and living were divided into two sections, a space for rituals and events in the front section and a space for living in the rear section.
  • In the norther part, garden site, a back garden, craft workshop (dump site) producing gold, glass or bronze, which were important items in the royal palace, and the best restroom of Baekje were found.
  • The Baekje Royal Palace was built during the reign of King Mu and important buildings in the royal palace were demolished during the late Baekje period. On the same space, the temple was built and managed until the Unified Silla period. The building sites were found partially only on the eastern part of the temple site during the Goryeo period.
  • Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri is the only place where the inner space was found for the first time among the ancient royal palaces. It provides important materials for studying the ancient royal palaces as it indicates the construction plan of the royal palace and the arrangement of buildings inside the royal palace.
