Cultural Life at the Royal Palace
Palace Toilets
- Three large restroom sites have been identified at the Baekje royal palace. These communal restroom sites featured a hygienic design where wastewater accumulates to a certain level in a pit before flowing out through a drainage system that leads outside the palace walls. During the excavation, various items were discovered within the pits, including melon seeds, oyster shells, cleaning sticks, and eggs of roundworms and hookworms, confirming their function as toilets. The toilets of the royal palace not only provide insights into the dietary culture of the Baekje people but also serve as valuable comparative materials with ancient toilets in Japan.
Palace Garden
- Remains of a Baekje-era garden have been discovered at the Baekje royal palace. This garden served as a space for the king to relax or entertain envoys. It features a central facility adorned with unique stones, large stones, and river pebbles, along with a water basin and a pavilion for enjoying the view. The garden can be considered eco-friendly, as it recreates natural landscapes such as rocks, mountains, and rivers on a smaller scale. The landscaping stones used in the garden were sourced locally, while the Garden Stone (Fish’s Scale Shaped) were imported from China. This indicates that there was a vibrant exchange with China, as the procurement of stones for decorative purposes demonstrates the extent of cultural and trade interactions.
Palace Workshop
- At the Baekje royal palace, a workshop specializing in the production of valuable items for the royal family has been identified. At the workshop site, over 300 crucibles used for melting metals and glass, along with burnt clay, grindstones, and slag. The gold artifacts discovered in the Baekje workshop exhibit various processing techniques, with artisans able to freely adjust the alloy compositions of gold and silver based on their intended use. Notably, similar crucibles and products found in the Asukaike archaeological site in Japan from the 7th to 8th centuries suggest a possible exchange of glass-making technologies between the two nations.
Palace Kitchen
- At the Baekje royal palace, a kitchen has been identified, where food was prepared and cooking-related items were stored. At the kitchen site, a hearth for cooking, an area for storing ingredients and cooking utensils, and drainage channels that appears to have been used for washing dishes were identified. Excavations revealed charred walls stained black from smoke, large quantities of charcoal, iron pots, and jars and bottles for storing food. The kitchen of the royal palace provides valuable insights into ancient culinary culture, showcasing the practices and technologies of the time.
Palace Pottery
- In Baekje, influenced by Chinese and Goguryeo tableware, many vessels were crafted in the shape of celadon bowls, as well as Pottery with Extended Rim, and Mounted bowls. A wide range of pottery types has been excavated from the royal palace, including Pottery with Extended Rim, Mounted bowls, plates, jars, toilet-shaped pots, lamps, and inkstones. At the Baekjae royal palace, Pottery with Extended Rim and Mounted bowls were crafted from carefully selected fine clay, ensuring uniform shape and size. These vessels were exclusive to individuals of high social status, indicating their significance in royal and aristocratic contexts, as evidenced by their discovery in the royal palace and Baekje urban sites.
Stamped Tiles
- Over 60 different types of stamped tiles have been identified at the royal palace. The inscriptions on these tiles include the names of Baekje's administrative districts, dates, producers' names, and symbolic marks. These stamps were likely used during tile production or inspection to indicate the production site, producer, production date, and intended use of the tiles.
